So you've decided to take the plunge and use a safety razor like grandpa did? Most men who try the old-school safety razor, a quality badger hair brush and shaving soap never look back. Here's a few tips to get you going in the right direction.
1. Take your time. When shaving with a safety razor, slow down. Leave the 5-bladed razor wielding shavers to rush the job and end up with razor burn. When using a safety razor, take your time and think about "beard reduction". This means making several passes, relathering between passes, each pass taking a bit more beard off than the last.
2. Watch the contours! Unlike one of the newer pivoting razors, the head doesn't move: you must manually adjust the angle of the blade to the contour of your face. Careful around the chin and jawline areas. Again, see tip #1!
3. Start with a hot, wet face. Always wash your face before shaving, then warm up the beard area for a minute or so with water or a hot towel or a combination of both. Keep your face wet while shaving.
4. Lather up well. Use a quality shaving soap with a badger hair brush. Do not use foam from a can! Some say the propellant in the aerosol can creates a foam with little pockets of air, these tiny pockets of air leave your face unprotected. Instead use shaving soap in a bowl and mix up a nice lather with a badger hair brush. Once you've tried it, you may never go back.
5. And lastly, use a sharp blade. The great thing about wet shaving is that after the initial expense of safety razor, brush, bowl and shaving soap, the razor blades are pretty cheap. So resist the urge to overuse a blade. Replace the DE (double edged) razor blade at least twice per month, depending on how many times you shave a week. If you have a particularly tough beard, you might want to change blades once a week.
Every face and set of whiskers is different, so find what works for you. There are a ton of great shaving soaps, razors, blades, brushes, etc. Have fun finding the right mix for your face and enjoy your shave for a change!
